What Are They Made Of?

Dental implants are constructed from a biocompatible titanium that bonds with the bone underneath in a process known as osseointegration (which you can read more about below).

They are essentially comprised of three parts – the titanium screw, the abutment, and finally the porcelain crown. These pieces aren’t all equal either: each piece will be carefully customized by Dr. Ajmo and his team to fit comfortably between your other teeth and appear as natural as possible. From the shape of the screw to the final composition of the porcelain crown, we guarantee that you’ll love your new tooth. Dr. Ajmo will be consulting with you at each step to ensure your comfort and convenience of the dental implant as a whole.

Osseointegration: How Does It Work?

You’ve seen this term used in your research for dental implants, but you’re unsure what this process actually entails. Osseointegration is a special fusion process that was discovered by accident in the early 1950s. A Swedish scientist named Per-Ingvar Brånemark realized that the titanium devices he implanted into rabbits’ legs were fusing to the bone, and transferred this knowledge to the field of dentistry. He became known as the father of dental implantology.

Today, dental implants have become an increasingly popular tooth replacement treatment thanks to this process. Osseointegration is what bonds the dental implant to the bone by triggering the bone to regenerate and weave fibers around the implant. It creates a solid foundation for the dental implant to be placed and offers a solidarity that’s not often found in other tooth replacement treatments.

Dental Implants: A Difference You Can Feel

Since osseointegration ensures that the dental implant remains locked tight to your jaw, it’s not uncommon for our patients to compare the feel of a dental implant as similar to having a natural tooth. With the customization and shape of the dental implant, from root to crown, it’s meant to fit like a glove in your smile.

Another advantage of osseointegration is the improvement to the functionality of your bite. When a tooth is lost, it can slightly alter how you eat and speak. A permanent dental implant replacement fills the space with a viable artificial tooth that is as strong as your normal teeth. This way our patients can enjoy their favorite foods again and speak naturally.
